Why a YouTube Video Might Not Have a Transcript

Not every video has one, and that's usually about the video itself, not the tool trying to read it.

Common reasons

Captions are unavailable. Some videos simply have no caption track at all — nothing manual, nothing automatic.

Automatic captions haven't been generated. YouTube doesn't always generate automatic captions immediately, and in some cases it doesn't generate them for a video at all.

The uploader hasn't provided captions. Manually written captions are optional — plenty of creators never add them.

The video has restrictions affecting captions. Certain videos have settings or restrictions that can limit what caption data is exposed.

The video is private or otherwise inaccessible. Private, unlisted, deleted, or region-restricted videos may not be reachable at all.

Availability varies by language and video. A video might have captions in one language but not another, or have inconsistent caption support depending on how and where it was uploaded.

    Make sure it's a real, complete YouTube video link, not a channel, playlist, or shortened/broken URL.

    Try another public video

    If a different video works fine, the issue is specific to the first video's available captions, not the tool.

    Check captions on YouTube directly

    Open the video on YouTube and look for the CC icon in the player. If it's missing or grayed out, no caption track exists for that video.

    Try again later

    Occasionally an issue is temporary rather than permanent — trying again after a bit can rule that out.
